Toledo Fire and Rescue Use Variety of HAZMAT Equipment

"Sometimes when we look at the latest and greatest, it may not fit our needs, it may not fit what we're trying to do, and the other aspect is we have to balance that with the cost. Just because it may be the latest and greatest, it may be out of reach for us depending on the cost of it,” said Pvt. Sterling Rahe of Toledo Fire and Rescue.

Currently, the department relies on an extensive range of protective coverings. Fire engines are like rolling toolboxes full of equipment to keep our first responders safe. They use things like safety goggles and masks to protect themselves from airborne particles and bodily fluids.

"There's just a myriad of different substances that we're exposed to on a daily basis we have to protect ourselves from, and it's very difficult to do that and just being vigilant on what type of substances are out there we can protect ourselves to a very good degree,” said Lt. Zakariya Reed with Toledo Fire’s EMS Bureau.

This was just one of two SEDC topics discussed by the city council during the meeting. They also addressed updates and changes in the corporation’s bylaws.

Cedar Council (UT) Approves Fire Truck Purchase

CCFD can now move forward with purchasing a new Type 3/Type 1 Wildland Urban Interface Fire Engine using funds from its capital reserve account. Fire Chief Mike Phillips approached council during the Sept. 19 meeting and explained the purpose of this account is for purchasing new apparatus and that purchasing this engine falls in line with the council-approved business plan for the department.

The new engine will be purchased from Superior Equipment, a state preferred vendor, for $447,862.24. While the engine will take 11-13 months to build once purchased, it will add versatility and overall cost reduction to the department’s fleet. The fleet currently includes several large structure engines, which are more expensive than Type 3/Type 1 and more specialized. Chief Phillips’ goal is to replace the use of the structure engines with Type 3/Type 1 over time as they can be used for structures as well as other non-urban purposes.
