A fast-moving grass fire swept toward homes near here Tuesday evening but was stopped by a triple-alarm response that included aerial water drops and dozens of firefighters. The fire threatened about 20 homes and may have started along Highway 28 when a vehicle lost its tire and wheel and sparks ignited grass and brush, said Grant County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Kyle Foreman.

Monday, firefighters completed control lines around the entire fire area, increasing fire containment to 52%. Hoses were also deployed around a major portion of the fire perimeter, and crews began mopping up hot spots adjacent to fire lines. The dry cold front associated with gusty winds arrived as predicted last evening and tested the established control lines.

Authorities say the Ryegrass Coulee fire is 0% contained and 1000 acres in size. In a press briefing Tuesday morning, officials said winds are fueling the flames and the town of Vantage remains under a Level 3 evacuation. Crews are hoping to get an air attack going on the fire soon. Officials also added that one small structure has been lost so far.
