Woman arrested during investigation into Kent house fire

A woman has been arrested in relation to a fire that burned a home in Kent early Thursday morning. The fire broke out before 4 a.m. in the 13300 block of SE 263rd Place, according to Puget Sound Fire officials. No one was hurt in the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but fire officials said the woman was brought in on outstanding warrants after being identified on surveillance video.

91-year-old great-grandmother escapes burning home in Vancouver

A 91-year-old woman was able to escape a spreading fire that destroyed one home and two neighboring structures in Vancouver just before 6 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters responded to the scene, in the 3100 block of Z Street, at about 6 p.m. after receiving reports of smoke and flames in the area. "This outbuilding and the one that’s actually on the ground right now were fully engulfed in flames.

Five dead after shooting at Maryland newspaper

Five people were killed on Thursday when a man with a shotgun opened fire in the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland’s capital, in a "targeted attack," police said. The suspect had sued the paper six years ago and lost. "This person was prepared to shoot people. His intent was to cause harm," Bill Krampf, deputy police chief of Anne Arundel County, said at a news conference Thursday evening.

Connecticut firefighter suffers serious injuries to face extinguishing fire caused by lightning

Town firefighters responded to fires potentially caused by lightning Thursday, one of which seriously injured a firefighter, officials said. Around 6:40 p.m., the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a call for a structure fire in the 1000 block of Mill Hill Road. Several units were dispatched to the residence and the first units on scene reported smoke coming from a large detached garage.

New York prosecutors to decide if charges justified in FDNY firefighter brawl

Bronx prosecutors are getting into the mix to decide if charges are justified in a drunken brawl between firefighters, the Daily News has learned. Earlier this month, a full-on firefighter fracas exploded between off-duty uniformed smoke eaters when someone was called the N-word. The fight happened in Billy’s Bar, near Yankee Stadium, between the Bronx’s Rescue Company 3 and members of Ladder Company 49 and Engine Company 68, The News reported — adding that no arrests were made at the time.
