Spokane’s newest deputy fire chief ready to help

Rex Strickland couldn’t be further from home. Coming from a county in Virginia whose eastern edge rubs against the nation’s capital, the Spokane Fire Department’s newest deputy fire chief is used to the rain. Lots of rain. And the people. Even more of them. That means he’s also acclimated to a bit more action than he’ll get in the other Washington’s second biggest city.

'I can't afford to work here:' Seattle EMT workers demand better wages

When people need medical transport in Seattle, it’s usually American Medical Response (AMR) that does it. But with the company’s seven-year contract with the city coming to an end, workers are asking for better wages. “Because contrary to popular belief, we are not paid like our brothers and sisters in the fire service,” EMT John Moore said.

Spokane Valley firefighters respond to man yelling for help in Spokane river

Spokane Valley firefighters responded to a report of a man yelling for help in the middle of the Spokane River around 3 p.m. Monday. The caller could see he man in the river just west of the Denny Ashlock Foot Bridge. He was not wearing a life jacket. As firefighters were trying to find the man, a passing power boat pulled him on board and took him to the north side of the river, where he was met by the Spokane Valley Fire Department water rescue team.

New Fire Station to Open in Bridgeland (TX)

Now, the 19,000 square feet, $5 million facility is nearly complete and ready for the grand opening to be held at the station Aug. 25 at 10 a.m.  

At the celebration, Padovan said they’ll have bounce houses and snacks along with tours of the station and trucks. They’ll also invite the public to participate in a ceremonial “push-in” of one of the fire trucks into the station.

Monaca (PA) Receives $830K Grant for New Fire Apparatus

Fire department officials are in discussions with several manufacturers to decide on the engine that will be the best fit for the departments. Gantz said the department plans to buy a truck that is an engine and a ladder truck combined.  

The new truck will replace a 1971 model that isn’t up to current standards, Gantz said. Having a fleet that meets current safety standards is imperative, Borough Manager Mario Leone said.

 

The department will have to scrap the old engine or donate it to a fire academy under the terms of the grant.
