For-Profit Firefighters Find Business In An At-Risk Oregon Community

No one was home at a house deep in the woods of Josephine County, Oregon. The people who live here had evacuated days ago along with hundreds of their neighbors. As flames from the Taylor Creek Fire got closer and closer, the firefighters showed up. They came to prepare for the worst so that if the wind picked up, they’d be ready to dash down the driveway and save this house, even if the forest burned around it.

Despite Texas law, firefighters denied workers comp for cancer treatment

On Kevin Leago’s July CT scan, his torso looks like it has been riddled with birdshot. Dark splotches speckle his liver, his pancreas, his spine, marking where his neuroendocrine cancer has spread. The pain in his bones has left the 38-year-old Houston Fire Department senior captain unable to work since the end of May.

Second suspected arson fire in 2 days levels Yakima warehouse; $20 million in damage

Arson is blamed for a four-alarm fire Saturday morning at a Yakima warehouse that required fire crews from as far away as Kittitas County and caused an estimated $20 million in damage. It was the second time in 48 hours that fire broke out at Fruit Packers Supply Inc.Both fires are under investigation by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Rogue plane takes off from Sea-Tac Airport; crashes on remote Pierce County island

“My pilot speaking,” her tweet began. “It’s a Horizon Q400 big turboprop. Some guy stole it. Looked up how to fly on the internet. He’s been around Mount Rainier, now is going to Olympics. He doesn’t know what he is doing. He has everything in the area locked down.” Within the hour, Sea-Tac Airport confirmed the rogue mission: "An airline employee conducted an unauthorized takeoff without passengers at Sea-Tac; aircraft has crashed in south Puget Sound.

Neighbors survey damage after fast-moving wildfire destroys multiple Kennewick homes

As Saturday's wildfires rushed toward homes, the folks living in the fires path had only minutes to grab what they could and escape. At least two homes are completely destroyed in the Canyon Lakes area, where the evacuation order was eventually lifted so folks could protect their homes from flareups as firefighters attacked it from the rapidly-advancing front line.
