PHOTO - A kindergartner rode to his first day of school in style fulfilling the wishes of his late father.
Last week, Cooper Brooks, 5, arrived in a fire truck alongside dad Christopher Brooks' colleagues from the Sullivan County Volunteer Fire Department.
Christopher Brooks, a father of three and volunteer firefighter, died May 7 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

As the Puyallup Police Department embarks on its move to South Hill, Central Pierce Fire & Rescue is putting shovels in the ground for their state-of-the-art station on the same lot.
CPFR is building a new Station 72 on two acres of what’s known as the Lumbermen’s property at 703 39th SE. It will stand alongside the new Puyallup Justice Center.

As part of the Washington State Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) ongoing efforts to strengthen rural fire districts in wildfire-prone areas, the agency has announced the 10 districts and communities that will receive an additional fire engine at no cost this year.
“Local fire districts are invaluable to successful initial attack efforts,” said Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz.

A new 'roving' Ventura City fire engine came online in early August. The Star joined the three-member crew a week after the service started.
It had been a week since the three-member unit was activated. On Monday, crew members Capt. Thomas Hoffman, engineer Jan Hargett and firefighter-paramedic Brandon Bencomo gathered near the rear of the station attempting to fit in a workout before the calls began.

Unlike standard firefighter shifts, where personnel can spend more than 24 hours at their station, the crew of Medic Engine No. 7 is working days —  8 a.m. to 6 p.m., what firefighters call “8 to 18” shift.
