Firefighting foam with a chemical thought to cause cancer and other health problems will be banned in two years for local fire departments and districts in Washington. A new law signed Tuesday bans the group of chemicals that are contaminating some wells in Airway Heights and other water sources near military bases, although it won’t directly affect that contamination.

A woman died while trying to escape from a home engulfed in flames in Sedro-Woolley overnight. Firefighters responded to the home in the 1000 block of Sterling Street at about 1:10 a.m. to extinguish the blaze. The woman was found dead at the scene. A neighbor, Brenda Suryan Sem, said fire crews arrived quickly, but the flames spread fast and furiously.

Firefighters quickly contained a garage fire Tuesday morning, preventing further damage to a Camas home. Multiple fire engines were dispatched to 4530 Northwest Dahlia Drive, a home near Lacamas Lake, about 8:35 a.m., according to emergency radio traffic monitored at The Columbian. A total of 24 firefighters with the Camas-Washougal and Vancouver fire departments and East County Fire and Rescue helped with the response.
