Lava destroys 26 homes on Hawaii Big Island and threatens dozens more

Growing eruptions in the Big Island's Leilani Estates on Sunday night prompted officials to issue an emergency alert urging any residents remaining in the lava-ravaged subdivision to "go now" and stoking fears that the toll of homes claimed by lava — at 26 so far — would undoubtedly grow. New York town's legal bills for firefighters' contract dispute exceed $634,000

The cost of the city’s legal bills for the ongoing firefighters’ contract dispute increased $110,000 during a recent three-month period and now exceeds $634,000. City Comptroller James E. Mills on Friday confirmed that the law firm has billed $634,740.56 through January for costs associated with the nearly four-year labor dispute with the Watertown Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 191.

Man injured in Federal Way roof collapse

South King Fire and Rescue says a man was seriously injured after the roof of the Federal Way home he was demolishing collapsed. The News Tribune reports that firefighters were dispatched to the home on 18th Avenue South about 7:50 p.m. Sunday. Battalion Chief Ryan Herrera says they found the man, who is in his late 50s or early 60s, on the ground with "fairly significant" head trauma.

Motor home burns near Sequim

A motor home burned at the Olympic Paradise RV Park near Sequim on Saturday, Clallam County Fire District No. 3 officials said. No one was injured in the blaze at 137 Pierson Road. The owner and his dog were visiting friends at the time of the fire, District 3 Assistant Chief Dan Orr said. “The first arriving crew stated the motor home was fully involved,” Orr said in a news release.
