In Oregon college town, cramming for finals one day, fighting fires the next

Jakob Eisenbeiss could see the roaring flames from four blocks away. He heard the cries of concerned neighbors as the flames consumed the house beside theirs, wondering if their home would be next. But Eisenbeiss could not afford to get distracted. He had a job to do. With his lieutenant at his side, he got to work.

Fire crews nearing full containment of 25 Mile Creek and Chelan Hills fires

Firefighters appear poised to seal the fate of two fires currently burning in Chelan and Douglas counties. Fire officials say the 25 Mile Creek Fire near Manson is 80% contained. Full containment of the once destructive blaze is anticipated to happen Wednesday. State mobilization crews will disperse by Tuesday evening.

Batali gets nod for Bainbridge Island Fire Department board commissioner

Gina Batali was unanimously appointed to the board of commissioners for the Bainbridge Island Fire Department at the board’s meeting last week. Batali will serve in the Position 3 seat left vacant by the resignation last week of Bruce Alward. She is a north Bainbridge resident and the former owner of Salumi Artisan Cured Meats in Pioneer Square.

Man Rescued After Fall in Bellingham's Whatcom Falls Park

A man, believed to be in his teens, slipped down a steep cliff Sunday afternoon in Whatcom Falls Park and had to be rescued by a team that included the Bellingham Fire Department. The incident occurred at approximately 4:51 p.m. Sunday near the 15-foot Middle Falls, also known as Pixie Falls. “I don’t think he was jumping or anything like that,” Bellingham Fire Chief Bill Newbold said.
