A local fire department is grieving after their chief passed away Sunday night after he went into cardiac arrest following a training. Hyde County Emergency Services says Engelhard Fire & Rescue Chief Tony Spencer III died shortly after the fire department held a prayer service for him. Spencer went into cardiac arrest a few hours following a Firefighter I & II hose certification class Thursday evening, May 31.

When Beverly fire Chief Paul Cotter turns 65 next spring, he wants to still be serving alongside his fellow firefighters, not forced to retire as state law mandates. The city has petitioned the state Legislature to allow Cotter to continue to work, and retire on his own terms. The matter is currently under consideration.

A firefighters organization recently filed complaints with federal and state agencies about a training exercise, claiming that fire officials endangered its members and the public when they burned an empty Pungo house that contained asbestos. The city and the firefighters group agree the house contained the material, but how much was there and when fire officials learned of its existence is in dispute.

A man has died from his injuries after he was struck by a Phoenix Fire Department vehicle as it was leaving a station, according to officials. The incident occurred Monday near 12th Avenue and Pierce Street around 11:37 a.m., police said. The man was taken to the hospital, but was later pronounced dead, according to police.

Chicago Fire Department diver Juan Bucio, who died last week while trying to rescue a missing boater, was laid to rest on Monday. Hundreds attended the funeral at St. Rita High School Chapel on the Southwest Side, where Bucio's casket - draped in a Chicago flag - arrived via a CFD fire engine to the sounds of bagpipes.
