California Supreme Court refuses to reinstate San Francisco firefighters’ award

The state Supreme Court refused Wednesday to reinstate a San Francisco jury’s $3.7 million damage award to 15 firefighters who claimed age discrimination in the city’s scoring of a 2008 exam on promotions to lieutenant. The Superior Court jury agreed with the firefighters in 2013 that the Fire Department’s exam unit had weighed some parts of the test more than others, and ranked the test-takers, in ways that were unrelated to fitness for the promotion, and that had an adverse effect on applicants older than 40.

'It was incredible': 4-year-old boy gets to meet Port Orchard firefighters who helped save him

A 4-year-old boy who was saved by his mother's and firefighters' CPR efforts got to meet the first responders who were there to help. "It was incredible," said mom Stephanie Lentell. "I underestimated the emotional impact facing these firefighters would have, but to be able to personally thank them and have them meet Michael was amazing.

New Fire Station Planned in LaPorte (IN)

She said efforts are underway to scale back the cost to within budget so construction on the nearly eight-acre site at 4504 W. Johnson Road can start in the spring.

The goal is to move in by December.

Kevin Jerndt, an assistant fire chief at the department, said the current station at 305 W. Johnson Road just outside the LaPorte city limits is cramped from being designed in the 1950s for trucks, ladders and other equipment not as large as modern firefighting vehicles and equipment.

North Platte (NE) Looks to Apply for Fire Apparatus Grant

"It's done all it can for us and we're experiencing more and more mechanical issues with it all of the time," said Thompson. "It doesn't meet all of the safety requirements that the National Fire Protection Association has mandated in terms of vehicle safety features for some of our personnel."  

Thompson says the grant is very competitive, in that, they are competing against other fire stations nationwide, including Puerto Rico.
