Each of the five boroughs of New York City—Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island—has one heavy rescue assigned to it and is staffed by an officer and five firefighters. These new rescues will replace the five existing Ferrara units purchased in 2010.

Because of FDNY’s high call volume of more than 550,000 annual calls, the fleet’s heavy rescue units are replaced every seven years. The rescue companies carry a wide variety of specialized tools and equipment and have the training to handle incidents that may be outside the capabilities of a normal engine or ladder company.

The new rigs will feature:

• Ferrara’s Ultra™ custom two-door cab/chassis and walk-in rescue bodies, both manufactured of 12-gauge 3CR12 stainless steel
• Exterior compartment storage of 492 cubic feet and interior compartment storage of 202 cubic feet, with custom shelving, trays, and storage modules to maximize space and for ease of access to equipment
• Five-year bumper-to-bumper and 10- year structural warranty

As with the previous units, these new units will be built to FDNY’s specifications using components, engineering, and production methods to ensure the trucks endure the rigorous duty cycle of the FDNY.

All of the basics of starting a drone program from how to pick the best equipment, what to include in a good training curriculum, Federal Aviation Administration requirements and how to fulfill them, developing the appropriate standard operating procedures, mutual aid, and finding the best grants to pay for your program are covered. Emphasis will also be on training on the basics, understanding airspace, weather, aeronautical decision making, medical factors that could affect drone flight, airport environments, and radio communications.

These classes work best when participants are engaged in active discussion, so we will show several videos of various drone scenarios, take an interactive look at various types of airspace, and get hands on with the equipment to the extent we can in an Indoor session.

The objective would be to demystify the drone process for departments who may be unsure of where to begin.

OSHKOSH, WI—The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program’s open application period extends until Friday, March 16. This is the drop-dead date for submitting applications for financial assistance to purchase equipment needed to enhance firefighter and public safety—like Continental ExpressWash® Gear Washers and ExpressDry® Gear Dryers.
