Senate Reauthorizes AFG/SAFER and USFA

The U.S. Senate Thursday night passed the United States Fire Administration, AFG, and SAFER Program Reauthorization Act (H.R. 4661). The House of Representatives passed the same bill Monday. As a result, the measure is on its way to the president’s desk, saving the FIRE and SAFER Grant programs from expiring on January 2 and pushing their sunset dates out to September 30, 2024.

'I do have some say over how I live' says retired Michigan firefighter, 51, with cancer

VIDEO - Rob Hecksel, a retired firefighter diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February, was hoping for a long second career as a social worker. He’s trying to compress that mission into his remaining time. Hecksel, 51, of Lansing was a battalion chief with the Lansing Fire Department. He retired three years ago after a 25-year career but wanted to find another job that he loved and that improved the lives of others.

Selah-area home catches fire; cause undetermined

Investigators were looking for the cause of a fire responsible for an estimated $50,000 in damage to a Dottie Drive home Thursday afternoon. Firefighters from Selah, Gleed and the Army’s Yakima Training Center went to the fire at the single-story home just west of town around 3:40 p.m. Smoke was coming from inside the house and under the roof eaves, said Selah Deputy Fire Chief Jim Lange.

2 residents reportedly injured in fire that heavily damaged Everett’s Colby Square Apartments

Everett firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze at the Colby Square Apartments in the 2200 block of Colby Avenue late Thursday night. The Everett Fire Marshal said that all 14 units in the two-story apartment were left uninhabitable. He didn't know the number of residents who lived there, but he noted that the Red Cross was on the scene to help those displaced.
