Woman tries to stab Arizona firefighter answering 911 call

A woman tried to stab a Tucson fire captain in the chest early this morning as he and other crewmembers were outside an apartment answering a 911 call, officials say. Should NFPA develop an all-new standard on PPE contaminant control or roll the requirements into NFPA 1581?

The NFPA Standards Council has received a New Project Initiation Request from the fire service asking NFPA consider developing an ANSI Accredited Standard to establish the minimum requirements for the effective contamination control of fire department personal, their personal protective equipment (PPE), accessories, and equipment.

New York governor favors cancer coverage bill for volunteer firefighters

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said he is “favorably disposed” to a bill that would provide medical coverage for volunteer firefighters who develop cancer from the job. The bill passed the state Senate and Assembly this year and awaits the governor’s signature. Gov. Cuomo, speaking in Watertown Wednesday following his $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative award announcement, said that the bill has not yet reached his desk, but it’s one he’s more inclined to support.

20 years of saving lives, averting disaster near Richland

On 88 acres just north of Richland fires rage and rescue workers rappel down the side of a building. For 20 years the Department of Energy’s HAMMER training center has trained workers holding some of the nation’s most hazardous jobs, nuclear waste cleanup and emergency response. The goal — save lives and avert disaster.

State patrol arrests 2 people after car chase ends in brush fire south of Kennewick

The Washington State Patrol has arrested two people in connection with an Oregon car chase that ended with a brush fire. Benton County Fire District 1 tweeted that a fire started at about 4:20 p.m. Thursday in the area of Beck Road along Interstate 82. The fire started at one acre, but quickly spread to 80 acres before it was contained.
