Three-alarm fire destroys house in Gleed

A three-alarm fire Saturday afternoon destroyed a house on Eschbach Road in Gleed. No injuries were reported. Multiple fire districts responded to a structure fire near U.S. Highway 12. The first units were called around 5:30 p.m. before the second and third alarms were called. Firefighters had the fire under control around 7 p.

Firefighters knock down blaze at 9-unit apartment in Spokane

Spokane firefighters responded just after 1 p.m. Friday to a structure fire inside a nine-unit apartment building in Browne’s Addition. Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer said the fire at 1730 W. Pacific Avenue likely started in the basement and extended to the building’s attic. “Everyone was evacuated. There were no injuries,” Schaeffer said.

St. Joseph boosts firefighting rating

ST. JOSEPH - St. Joseph residents can sleep a little sounder, now that the public safety department improved its fire safety rating. That higher rating could also save property owners on their homeowners insurance. Public Safety Director Brian Uridge announced that the department's Public Protection Classification from the Insurance Services Office had improved from 5 to 4 following a recent review.

St. Joseph earned 66.61 points out of a possible 105.5.

In all, up to 50 points are awarded for the fire department, 40 for the water supply, and another 10 (plus 5.5 for extra credit) for community risk reduction that takes into account fire prevention code adoption and enforcement, public fire safety education, and fire investigation.

The department received  26 points for its firefighting capabilities and 33.73 for its water system, plus 9.44 for emergency communications, and 3.92 points for community risk reduction.

Uridge said that they came close to earning a rating of 3. In Michigan only 205 departments have a rating of 4, 32 have earned a 3 and five have a 2. No departments in Michigan have a rating of 1.

Only one other fire department in Berrien County has a rating of 4, the highest in the county.

Deputy Safety Director Jeremy Connell, who oversees the firefighting operation, is confident that the city can reach the next level after the review that will take place in 2020. ISO had been reviewing departments every 10 years, but recently switched to a three-year rotation.

Technology, time, and a new semi-sized ambulance are giving the tiniest of babies a better chance of survival.

Packed inside a semi-tractor trailer sized emergency vehicle is lifesaving equipment.

"Having an ambulance this big allows us to have all of the equipment we need all the way up from a newborn all the way up to someone who's 21-year-old," E.M.T. Trevor Miller-Evans says. "It gives us the ability to bring a fully mobile ICU with us to these other outlying facilities.”

Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital got the custom designed Lifeline-5 five unit in January 2016.

 

The unit has enough seating for parents with special 5-point seat belts to improve safety.

The Staunton Fire & Rescue Department will receive a $2,500 fire prevention grant from FM Global, one of the world's largest commercial property insurers.

Fire prevention grants by FM Global typically help fire investigators more effectively determine the cause of a fire. “These funds will be used to purchase camera equipment used for fire investigations, environmental crime investigations and other investigations conducted by the city fire marshal’s office,” said Perry Weller, fire marshal for the City of Staunton. “We’re grateful for the award as it will bolster the accuracy and efficiency of our investigations.” Because fire continues to be the leading cause of property damage worldwide, FM Global has contributed millions of dollars in fire prevention grants to fire service organizations around the globe over the last 40 years. Among the grant recipients are a number of Virginia-based organizations.
