15 Magirus Turntable Ladders for the Munich Fire Department

ULM, GERMANY—The Munich Fire Department has recently put 15 new Magirus turntable ladders into operation. The identical M32L-AS turntable ladders are on a low-profile chassis. To mark the delivery, a symbolic key was handed over to the head of Munich’s Fire Protection Authorities, engineer Wolfgang Schäuble, at the fire station No. 1 by Marc Diening, Magirus CEO. “Based on this further development of the low-level turntable ladder family we are able to support the Munich Fire Department even more effectively at their missions,” emphasized Diening while voicing his thanks for the constructive cooperation with the Munich FD.

Low archways and narrow old-town streets as well as increasing numbers of automobiles on the roads often make it difficult for the Munich FD to get to where it is needed. The specific requirements for very compact dimensions and extreme agility are met by the Magirus low-level turntable ladder concept. This vehicle combines high standards of safety, comfort, and ergonomics with a total height of 3 meters and a total width of 2.40 meters. "The turntable ladders on low-profile chassis guarantee direct, fast access and reliably ensure the rescue of persons in Munich and the surrounding areas," Schäuble pointed out.

The development work initiated by Magirus with the chassis manufacturer IVECO is the basis for the compact dimensions. Compared to a standard Eurocargo chassis in the 16-ton class, the cab is positioned in front of the front axle and is significantly lower. The vehicle's enormous manoeuvrability offers significant advantages when it comes to travel time. Up to a speed of 30 km/h, the rear axle of the vehicle steers independently. A reduced turning circle of approximately 14 m allows simple manoeuvring and significantly minimizes shunting. The turntable ladder for the Munich Fire Department also solves the increased design requirements connected with the Euro VI emission category especially impacting on compact vehicles.

For the turntable ladder configuration, the Munich Fire Department decided on the unique Magirus articulated technology. The M32L-AS has a four-part ladder set with Magirus Single Extension technology. The first ladder section is in the single extension before further ladder sections follow in parallel. Compared to standard turntable ladders, an extended outreach is available for rescue operations.

An articulated arm can lower the RC300 rescue basket directly in front of the cab at the press of a button. The Magirus Direct Entry (MDE) concept facilitates boarding in the basket as well as the attachment of different components such as stretchers, water monitors, chainsaws, or additional spotlights to the two multifunction columns. Thanks to the security cameras in the basket and in the pivot of the articulated arm, the operator always has a comprehensive overview, even when a ladder section is angled.

The largest municipal fire department in Germany has relied on the innovative firefighting technology from the Ulm-based company for decades. This collaboration goes back to the late 1970s, with the joint development of a turntable ladder concept that was a true game changer of this time. The requirement profile was short and concise: low, narrow, agile, and with utmost operator convenience. In 1980, Magirus delivered 12 turntable ladders on low-profile chassis. The Magirus turntable ladder concept convinced. In 1997, all turntable ladders

Braun Industries and Pierce Manufacturing Partner for All-in-One Apparatus

VAN WERT, OH—Braun Industries and Pierce Manufacturing Inc. recently announced they will be partnering to bring the Pierce Saber® chassis to the Braun Patriot ambulance. This exclusive partnership will further enhance the Patriot model, an apparatus that can serve as an ambulance, rescue vehicle, and fire suppression unit. Ideally suited for volunteer fire departments without the personnel to staff several emergency vehicles, Pierce’s industry-standard chassis—the Saber®—will be a welcome addition to the model.

“We are very pleased to have two power-house, premium brands—Braun and Pierce—come together for the development of this product,” says Braun Industries President Kim Braun. “Our Patriot ambulance model will be offered on the Saber® chassis platform. This exclusive module/chassis combination will meet the needs of our customer base in serving local communities with the highest degree of reliability and excellence you can find in a work truck. Our two companies have many similarities, and those alignments start first and foremost with our commitment to quality.”

The Braun Patriot model was designed with the EMS industry in mind. Engineered to respond to more than 95 percent of emergency calls, it covers EMS-related, light rescue, and/or light suppression dispatches. With 73 inches of interior headroom and enough room for up to six crew members and emergency medical equipment, the Patriot delivers maximum interior space and increased available payload inside the box. With ample room for emergency medical equipment and supplies to aid in rescue, and the capacity to carry water, every inch of the vehicle is used to perform a wide variety of emergency services.

The Pierce Saber® chassis is the perfect complement to the Patriot ambulance. Built with the value-driven firefighter in mind, it offers exceptional visibility, greater space, improved ergonomics and streamlined serviceability. With seating capacity for eight and a Cummins L9 engine, it is the ideal chassis for the Braun Patriot model.

Both companies are excited to announce this exclusive partnership. The two are well-known in the fire/EMS industry for their exceptional commitment to quality and safety, and together they will deliver a premium product. They are currently accepting orders for the new Patriot model on the Saber® chassis. The first completed unit is set to display at FDIC International 2018.

MSA Completes Acquisition of Globe Manufacturing

PITTSBURGH – MSA Safety Incorporated (NYSE: MSA) today announced it has completed its acquisition of Globe Holding Company, LLC (“Globe”) of Pittsfield, New Hampshire, in an all-cash transaction valued at $215 million, or approximately 2 times revenue and 9 times EBITDA on a trailing 12 month basis.  Globe is a leading innovator and manufacturer of firefighter protective clothing and boots, with approximately 420 employees across four U.S. locations.  The transaction, which MSA announced in late June, was financed through incremental borrowings with an after-tax cost of less than 2 percent.

With the acquisition complete, MSA significantly strengthens its position as a leader in the North American market for firefighter personal protective equipment (PPE).  “Globe is a highly recognized and respected brand of firefighter turnout gear, which very nicely complements our own line of firefighter protective equipment,” said William M. Lambert, MSA Chairman and CEO.  “With virtually no product overlap, the acquisition aligns well with our corporate strategy in that it expands our core product portfolio in a key customer segment.  More simply, it means we can now help protect firefighters from head to toe, with Cairns Helmets, our industry leading G1 self-contained breathing apparatus, and Globe turnout gear and boots,” he said.

Over the past several weeks, Mr. Lambert said the company has been focused on developing a cross-functional integration process.  “We have a very experienced integration team comprised of functional area business leaders from both organizations,” Mr. Lambert commented.  “Overall, as we prepared for today’s closing, this team has developed a plan that, among other things, ensures we leverage the strong equity of the Globe brand and identifies ways to maintain the processes and practices that have made Globe successful for so many years,” Mr. Lambert said.

Globe Manufacturing’s management team, including previous owners Don Welch, Rob Freese and Gef Freese, will continue to work for the company over the short term to ensure an effective transition.  “The entire Globe team is looking forward to building a rewarding future under this new ownership for our customers, employees and communities,” said Mr. Welch, Globe President.  “We think that this combination is a great fit and will add significant value beyond what we could accomplish on our own.”

MSA will provide more details about the transaction during its second quarter earnings conference call, scheduled for Friday, August 4 at 8:30 a.m. EDT.
