South Deerfield's New Fire Truck a Custom Addition

SOUTH DEERFIELD - The fire district's new Steward Stevenson fire truck was acquired from the military a few years ago and refurbished recently by Rose Ledge Co. in Erving."It was custom fabrication. There's not another one like it out there," said...

Before refabrication — completed late last year — the truck was painted in camouflage style and used as a transportation vehicle. After, its red paint sparkles and a 325-gallons-per-minute pump discharges water and foam from a 500-gallon tank.

“It’s really remarkable what happened to this truck. We cut the body right here,” said Deputy Chief Dennis Patterson, pointing to a part of the truck’s bed that steps down to facilitate the water tank.

Patterson said the truck’s primary purpose is to extinguish wild fires, but is also used during inclement weather because of its exceptional off-road capabilities and maneuverability.

Rolling Meadows Sticks with Plan to Move Fire Stations, for Now

For now, Rolling Meadows will proceed with plans to relocate and build two new fire stations, though the controversial proposal still isn't a done deal. Aldermen voted 4-2 Tuesday night in an informal straw vote to support current plans to replace Fire Station 15 at 3111 Meadow Drive with a new station to the south, and Fire Station 16 at 2455 S.

For the past decade, the city's elected officials have debated what to do about the aging downtown Fire Station 15 and how to improve response times citywide. The council decided to build a third station on Algonquin Road in 2014 but reversed course the next year, deciding to remain with two stations but in new locations.

Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote has endorsed the plan to relocate both stations. He cited data Tuesday that showed the area with the greatest fire risk is on the south side, with its preponderance of multistory apartment buildings that don't have fire sprinklers. And the highest call volume is from the east side.

"Our fire stations are in the wrong location to meet the risk profile and service demands of our community," he said. "We've known this for some time."

L.A. Fire Department Could Soon Seek Federal Permission to Fly Drones

The Los Angeles Fire Department could soon seek federal permission to fly drones, a tool that officials say could help them track down missing hikers, gauge the risks in burning buildings and search confined spaces.

Los Angeles City Council committee voted Tuesday to allow the department to start seeking Federal Aviation Administration authorization to use “unmanned aerial systems,” despite objections from groups concerned about privacy rights. That decision now heads to the entire council for approval.

“I think there’s a tremendous opportunity to save lives,” said Councilman Mitch Englander, who has championed the idea.

Fire officials say no drones will be launched, however, until the Board of Fire Commissioners and the City Council approve a policy outlining how they can be used. The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California has already raised concerns about draft guidelines, saying they do not go far enough to address “serious privacy concerns.”

'It exploded in my hands': Graphic photos show danger of legal fireworks

New research from Harborview Medical Center and the University of Washington shows legal fireworks are almost as dangerous as the illegal type. Michael Spencer, a pilot, lost several fingers and underwent 11 surgeries at Harborview to repair damage caused when a legal shell-and-mortar-style firework exploded in his hand as he was celebrating the July 4th holiday in Montana.
