Massachusetts fire department celebrates night of historic promotions

The current and former fire chiefs, with a combined 30 years at the helm, stood proudly Wednesday at the selectmen's meeting for an unprecedented night they'd long awaited: the appointment of five captains to the 31-member department. It was a first. "It's just a great night for us," said Scott Jepson, the chief of the past decade.

Spokane County: Family of three, four dogs escape house fire

A family of three and four dogs escaped a house fire early Wednesday morning in Deer Park. Megan Hill, spokeswoman for Spokane County Fire District 4, said first responders showed up to the residence at 29810 N. Short Road to the sound of fire alarms and heavy fire and smoke coming from the back side of the log home.

Spokane police and fire chiefs push back on sheriff's criticism of North Monroe project

Spokane’s police and fire chiefs said they are united in their support of a street renovation project on North Monroe Street, and do not share Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich’s concern that its design would hinder a downtown evacuation in case of emergency. “One hundred percent correct,” said Police Chief Craig Meidl, when asked if Monroe would suffice as an emergency evacuation route after it is reduced to three lanes from five.
