Incidents along Monroe St. Bridge in Spokane spark suicide prevention conversation

First responders have been called to rescue suicidal individuals who jumped or fell from the Monroe Street Bridge three times in the last three months. The recent incidents have sparked a conversation among officials. Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer said he would rather see more resources put toward mental health and suicide prevention.

Northwest Leadership Questions Proposed Cuts To Federal Wildfire Budget

President Donald Trump’s proposed budget for wildfire funding was front and center during a hearing Thursday in Washington, D.C.. Northwest leaders are not only questioning possible cuts, they’re also looking for different ways to get ahead during fire season. ???Sen. Maria Cantwell, the ranking member on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, told Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell her Washington state constituents have been saying wildfire prevention needs to be a priority.

Robbinsville (NJ) Fire Department Awarded $22K Federal Grant

Township firefighters will receive federal funding to update their medical equipment, U.S. Rep. Chris Smith recently announced. Smith said the Robbinsville Fire Department will be awarded a $22,740 grant from the Department of Homeland Security, through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program.
Smith said in a statement the grant will be used to purchase four defibrillators and one CPR device. The money will cover about 95 percent of the total cost, replacing the township's current outdated equipment, he said.

In 2000, Smith helped create the AFG Program through his involvement with the Congressional Fire Services Caucus. Robbinsville received a grant of over $100,000 in 2015 through the program.

Lightning Strike Suspected as Cause of Fire in Williamsburg (VA) Fire Station

Fire officials believe a lightning strike caused a fire at the Williamsburg fire station at 440 N. Boundary Street. It happened on Wednesday around 4:15 p.m. Officials say the fire happened in one of the air conditioning units on the roof.
Most of the fire department personnel were out of the building on a separate call when the fire started.

Firefighters returned to the station and had the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes. James City County and York County Fire Departments helped put out the fire.

South Carolina Fire Apparatus Donated to CATE Center

A local fire department has donated a fire truck to a local educational institution to help train students interested in becoming firefighters. In a statement released Monday, the Union County Career and Technology Center (CATE) announced that it had recently received a fire engine from the Carlisle Volunteer Fire District.

The press release states that the “Carlisle Fire Department graciously donated the 1983 Chevrolet pumper/tanker for use in the Firefighter I and II programs. This fire truck will allow students in the firefighting classes to experience real life situations in preparation for firefighting /first responder careers.”
