Newlyweds Accept Avon (CT) Fire Apparatus Ride After Bus Catches on Fire

A newlywed couple had no problem saying "I do" a second time, when Connecticut firefighters asked them if they wanted a ride to their reception after their bus was disabled by a small fire.
Maria Leonardi and Justin Stone, of New York City, were treated to a 15-minute voyage in a fire engine from a church to her father's home in Avon on Saturday, complete with wailing sirens. Neither had ridden in a fire engine before.

"It was quite a spectacle," Leonardi said. "It just made the best day better."

Monroe (OH) Firefighters Restore 1924 Model T Fire Apparatus

As part of the city's bicentennial celebration, the Monroe Fire Department will be unveiling its restored 1924 Model T fire truck at tonight's City Council meeting. The Model T had been in storage at the Monroe Historical Society, according to Assistant Fire Chief Richard Mascarella.

He said the two-year restoration project was funded completely through donations and thousands of volunteer man-hours. Many local businesses also donated or provided discounted services to help insure the project could be completed within budget.

No one has yet seen the completed project, Mascarella said.

"It is critically important to us that no one sees it until Tuesday night," he said.

Mascarella said the restored truck will be featured at upcoming parades and events during Monroe's bicentennial celebration this year.

Survivor questions lack of surf rescue team in Ocean Shores

The fact that Ocean Shores had “decommissioned” its surf rescue team as a cost-saving item in the 2013 city budget never occurred to Jim Brannan as he clung to his overturned boat north of Damon Point for nearly an hour, watching responding police and firefighters arrive on the shore. “The public doesn’t know,” Brannan said Monday night after he went to the City Council to tell of his June 6 ordeal and question why no one would — or could — do more than shoot a lifeline toward him to help pull him ashore.

HURST Jaws of Life, Inc., launched six new tools, including cutters, combination tools, and spreaders. The SP 777 Spreader is slimmer and lighter than its predecessor, the SP 510, and perfectly suited for high-strength steel. Like the SP 777, the SP 777E2 Spreader from the HURST Jaws of Life eDRAULIC line has a single integrated cylinder body design and large blade opening.

The intuitive blade design of the S 312 and S 312E2 cutters provides a powerful cut while increased cutting force and fast opening and closing action ensure a quick rescue. With a compact cylinder body design, the SC 358 and SC 358E2 bring increased pulling force to the rescue scene. All six tools feature the ergonomically designed star grip for tool actuation from almost any gripping position, and a dead man control valve reverts to the neutral position if a worker’s hand slips from the control. www.jawsoflife.com, 800-537-2659

HME Ahrens-Fox, Inc., Ahrens-Fox Stainless Steel Centrifugal Pumps are for installation in all HME Ahrens-Fox fire apparatus. They feature a corrosion-resistant stainless steel volute case to extend service life and performance while reducing the need for anode maintenance typically found in iron case volutes. The stainless steel volute case is nearly three times more resistant to damage from cavitation and six times more resistant to wear or damage from pumping abrasive materials.

The construction of the pumps incorporates helical drive train gearing for quieter operation and double taper roller bearings supporting the shafts. These design elements allow a transfer-case rating of 19,500 ft-lbs in the AF-2000SS, 2,000-gpm model. The line includes 1,000-, 1,250-, 1,500-, 1,750-, and 2,000-gpm models, designated as the AF-1000SS, AF-1250SS, AF-1500SS, AF-1750SS, and AF-2000SS, respectively. www.firetrucks.com, 616-534-1463
