Grand Rapids (MI) Fire Department Wants to Use Drones

The Grand Rapids Fire Department wants to add drones to its arsenal of tools used to investigate fires and aid in rescues. After the idea was publicly introduced in January, the department is now ready to move forward with a formal request for the equipment this fall.
First, the city must hold a public hearing due to its policies that govern any time the city adds new surveillance equipment.

Fire Department Chief John Lehman told the city commission this week that the drone would not be used on a daily basis.

"There's not someone out there that we're trying to model - we're attempting to be the model for departments in the state of Michigan," Lehman said in an interview with MLive.

New program helped save mother, daughter hit by car in N. Spokane

The Spokane Fire Department said Thursday that two people are alive thanks to a program called Automatic Aid. On Wednesday afternoon, a mother and daughter were hit by a car in the North Spokane Costco parking lot. Officials said at one point, the mother was pinned under the car and crews had to lift the car to pull her out safely.

Edmonds now part of a regional fire authority

Edmonds’ renewal of a five-year contract with Fire District 1, approved in December, will remain the same after voters in Lynnwood and Fire District 1 service areas approved the creation and funding of the South Snohomish County Fire and Rescue Regional Fire Authority. The measure passed with 54 percent of the vote during the recent primary.

Kent's Puget Sound Fire board confirms hiring of new chief

The Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority board unanimously ratified the hiring of Matthew Morris to be the next fire chief. Morris will replace Jim Schneider, who is retiring at the end of August after 15 years as chief. The board voted Wednesday night on the hiring, but had announced Morris as the pick last month after interviews with three candidates.

Puyallup man in custody after setting own home on fire

A Puyallup man is in custody after setting his own home on fire Wednesday night, according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office. The fire broke out around 8:00 p.m. at a home on 66th Ave E and quickly engulfed the whole house. Firefighters had to shut down the street while they battled the blaze. Investigators said the home is a total loss.
