Fire breaks out in rooftop garden of downtown Seattle high-rise

A fire in rooftop garden of a high-rise building sent a plume of white smoke billowing over part of downtown Seattle Monday night. Firefighters were called to the scene just before 7:30 p.m. of the 17th floor of the Russell Investment Center located at 2nd Ave. and University, next to the Seattle Art Museum.

The event opened with a parade of antique and modern fire apparatus that started in the parking lot of the Schuylkill Mall and continued through Frackville to the fire school grounds on the Frackville-Morea Highway.

Both young and old alike, fire enthusiasts and just people interested in the fire service had the chance to see antique fire engines and ladder trucks, see how they operate and even drive an emergency vehicle.

Danbury (CT) Gets New Fire Apparatus

Firefighters recently took delivery of two new engines that feature some of the latest firefighting capabilities. The two new engines, bought from Pierce Manufacturing for about $1.2 million, have new LED lighting, more water capacity and an advanced communications system.
"In the past the driver would have to lean out and shout directions to the other firefighters," said Assistant Fire Chief Mark Omasta. "The new engines come with headsets so that firefighters can communicate clearly with each other and the dispatch center."

The engines also have electronic connections for tools such as the Jaws of Life, which are preferable to hydraulic units that require hoses and other apparatus to operate.
