Crews battle big blaze at abandoned home in Kent

PHOTOS - Firefighters battled a large fire at a home in an isolated area of Kent Friday morning. Crews rushed to the 22300 block of Russell Road South just before 5:30 a.m. to find the second floor of the home engulfed in flames. Photos show smoke pouring from the structure. The house was abandoned and is owned by the city, Kyle Ohashi with the Kent Fire Department says.

Video: Danville (VA) Fire Department Headquarters Design Project

This project involved the fire station headquarters for the Danville (VA) Fire Department. The project site included one and a half city blocks that contained vacant buildings and two exposed stream channels. As work on teh site began, crews discovered cobblestones hidden below the asphalt and incorporated them into teh design. In this short video, Ken Newell, principal, Stewart-Cooper-Newell Architects, describes the project.

Four new state laws underscore a renewed focus on fire prevention

The damage caused by Washington’s increasingly devastating wildfires hasn’t gone unnoticed in Olympia. Four bills passed this session will take effect next month to help state and local firefighters more effectively prevent and combat wildland fires. Although some funding remains uncertain, legislators hope better collaboration and more prevention efforts will avoid a repeat of the unprecedented wildfire seasons of 2014 and 2015, and perhaps this year.

Benton and Franklin Counties listed at very high, extreme fire danger

With the brittle and dry environment and increasing fire danger, firefighters are responding to a lot of fires in our region. Firefighters say there's no denying it—fire season is here. Benton and Franklin Counties are both currently listed as very high, to extreme fire danger, according to the Department of Natural Resources.
