Virginia Fire Station Catches Fire; Firetruck Destroyed

Fairfax County, Virginia, firefighters had to battle a blaze inside their own station early Sunday morning.


The fire spread to the roof of the station, and a second alarm was called for additional crews.

It took about 45 minutes to get the fire under control. There were no injuries and no impact for service in the community.

Father, baby girl dead in 3-vehicle wreck on Mount Baker Highway

A Maple Falls-area man crossed the center line of Mount Baker Highway, hitting two cars and causing a horrific Mother’s Day wreck that killed a father and his infant daughter near Mosquito Lake Road, authorities said Sunday. “It was a tough, tragic situation,” said Chief Jerry DeBruin of Whatcom County Fire District 14, which serves the rural communities of Welcome, Kendall and Sumas.

Arizona fire department taking strides to ensure mental, physical health of troubled employees

For years, Tucson-area fire departments have been working with a local health-care program to create a comprehensive medical plan that addresses stress and mental health in first responders. April was a difficult month for the Tucson Fire Department, with a murder-suicide perpetrated by one of its own taking place days before the sentencing of a former captain for three murders.

North Carolina fire chief was slated to lose his job last year, but City Council saved it

The former city manager wanted to fire Charlotte Fire Department Chief Jon Hannan last year, but the City Council blocked the move, according to a deposition from this week’s whistleblower trial that ended with a $1.5 million verdict against the city. Ron Carlee wanted to fire Hannan because of the chief’s “lying” to him over leaking part of a personnel file to retaliate against a firefighter union leader, according to his deposition.
