A volunteer firefighter in Lancaster County is being credited with saving the life of his 5-year-old son, after the boy slipped away from his family and nearly drowned in a backyard pool. Pittsburgh City Council on Wednesday voted unanimously to advance legislation that would provide training for 100 firefighters to operate a $542,750 fireboat the city ordered from Lake Assault Boats of Superior, Wis., this year. An elderly woman was hospitalized and 4 family pets died when a Cowlitz County home caught fire Wednesday morning, officials said. A woman who lives in the home on the 100 block of Yelton Drive said she was woken up when she heard an explosion just after 4 a.m., Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue said. The woman said she got her elderly mother out of the house and called for help.

Pullman Fire Department released a statement Wednesday night saying an accidental fire caused by a discarded cigarette burned down a two story duplex. Fire crews were called to a duplex on Northwest Sunrise Drive after a neighbor told 911 operators that he could see flames and smoke coming from the upper unit of the house.
