Boston foam fire trucks aim to quell small blazes, reduce cancer risk

The 23 fire engines set for their Boston debut this year will be equipped with foam that can be powerfully effective in helping quash certain blazes and are intended to decrease the risk of cancer for city firefighters, officials said Tuesday. Fire Commissioner Joseph E. Finn said that foam will be used only on dumpster and vehicle blazes, which are most hazardous to firefighters’ health.

When a fire chief needs to go to all-hands, in-person communication

In response to hazing scandals resulting in lawsuits, FDNY Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro recently announced that he would meet in person with every fire officer on the New York City Fire Department, over 900 of them. Groups of officers would attend meetings at the Randall’s Island training facility.

Virginia paramedic's mom wants firefighter 'culture' changed after reading letter

A Fairfax County supervisor says she’s “fit to be tied” over comments condoning bullying allegedly made by fire department captain. WUSA9 broke the story of a letter written by a parent of a fire recruit, one year after the suicide of Fairfax County paramedic Nicole Mittendorff, who was bullied online by people who appeared to be firefighters.

Grain elevator catches fire in Kalama

A grain elevator caught fire Tuesday afternoon in Kalama, Cowlitz Fire officials said. No one was hurt in the fire. Reports of the fire came in just after noon at the Temco facility on the Columbia River. Cowlitz Fire Dit. 5 Chief Vic Leatzow called out a second alarm after seeing the thick smoke coming from the tower that offloads barges.

Car crashes into Seattle adult family care facility killing woman

A 72-year-old woman died after a car crashed into her bedroom Tuesday morning in Seattle. Seattle police and fire were called to the 10700 block of 38th Avenue Northeast after getting reports of a car that had crashed into an adult family care facility. Emergency crews found a 2004 Mercedes sedan lodged inside the house driven by an 88-year-old woman.
