New Fire Truck Goes into Service at Walla Walla Regional Airport

The Walla Walla Regional Airport has a new fire rig that can quickly take a bite out of flames. Called ARFF, for airport rescue and fire fighting, the engine will be used by Walla Walla County Fire District Four firefighters, who've spent the past two days training with it.

The airport has two existing ARFFs, a primary-use 1996 model and a backup from 1982. When the new model is put in service this month, the 1982 model will be auctioned and the 1996 truck will be relegated to backup duty, Skoglund said. The FAA recommends that ARFF vehicles be replaced at the 15-year mark, so with the newer model approaching 21 years in service, she said, “it was time to get it updated.”

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - One person was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after their vehicle collided with a fire engine near East Mission Avenue and North University Road in Spokane Valley. Fire Engine 1 from the Spokane Valley Fire Department was returning from a medical call to the fire station and turned off Mission Avenue to head south on University Road.

Original 1946 Chevrolet Fire Truck Headed Home as a Blackman Township Icon

JACKSON, MI - Blackman Township's original 1946 pumper truck wasn't the gem of the fire department. It was cold to drive in the winter, as the box heater inside didn't do much and the windshield wipers weren't reliable. In the summer, the method of "air conditioning" was tilting out the windshield via a mechanical crank.

The red 1946 Chevrolet fire truck was built in Detroit. It became Blackman Township's original pumper when it started its fire department in 1946.

Decommissioned in 1976, the truck was purchased that year for less than $1,000 by Keith Johncox in Onsted. It sat in storage and occasionally made it to a local parade.

It cost the city about $88,000 to buy 150 vests at $586 each. The city bought enough that every firefighter would be able to use one while on shift.

Tignish Fire Dept. Thankful for Support

The Tignish department has acquired a heavy-duty International Tandem truck to be used as its Pumper 2. They’ve decommissioned a 1999 tanker and transferred the 4,000-gallon tank to their new truck, all at an approximate $150,000 cost.

All five trucks in the fleet – two tankers, two pumpers and a rescue vehicle – are Internationals.
