Joplin (MO) Firefighters Rev Up Historic Fire Apparatus

Joplin's firefighters have taken a 1939 ladder truck with a special place in history out of mothballs and are getting it road ready again as money is available to finish the effort. She won't be racing to fires, but fire Chief Jim Furgerson said Monday the Pirsch & Sons 100-foot aerial truck could be used for display and at special events when it can be safely driven again.
In addition to that claim to fame, the vehicle is locally important because it was used in the fire department's response to the 1978 collapse of the Connor Hotel, where three men were trapped and one was extricated alive.

Battalion Chief Doug Nolan is one of those working to get the truck running again. The city bought it in 1939 and used it until 1991. "It's been in the fire department and city's possession since that time. Fortunately, the city kept the vehicle. We're hoping to put it back in service for parade use or education from what was state of the art in 1939 to what is state of the art now and keep some of that history alive."

Willow Park (TX) Getting New Fire Apparatus

The Willow Park Fire/Rescue Department is getting some new rides. The city council approved at its recent meeting a lease purchase agreement with Government Capital Corporation, out of Southlake, for a couple of new trucks.

Fire Chief Mike Lenoir said the city will trade in two trucks. One is a 1999 E-One Freightliner FL70 commercial cab and the other is a 2003 American LaFrance Freighliner FL80 Tanker/Tender commercial cab.

He said they will move the current main engine to a reserve status once the new engine arrives.

"The current engine is a 2010 model that went into service in 2011. It currently already has 54,298 miles with 4,685 motor hour running 800-1100 calls per year," Lenoir said.

GoTenna Pro Meshing Radio Aspires to Deploy Next to Rescue, Fire, and Security Teams

Keeping in touch when there's no communications infrastructure for one reason or another is nice for you and me, but critical for disaster response, forest fire control, and military operations.
You might remember the original goTenna, a device the size of a candy bar that connected with your phone over Bluetooth, then used walkie-talkie frequencies to let you message and exchange GPS coordinates with other goTenna-equipped phones up to a few miles away.

Hybrid Vehicle: Greenville's New Fire Truck Is Also An Ambulance

It's red, shiny, weighs more than 10 tons, puts out fires, carries the injured to the hospital and costs $800,000. Greenville Fire/Rescue showed off its new custom-built fire truck/ambulance Monday at Station 3 at the corner of Charles Boulevard and Red Banks Road.

For an EMS call, generally, Greenville sends an ambulance and an SUV that serves as a support vehicle, but sometimes all the ambulances are busy, so the new fire truck will be able to serve as an ambulance or be available as a fire truck, Griffin said.
