Kennewick fire chief awarded the Martin Luther King Spirit Award

Despite the cold weather, many people stood outside at Columbia Basin College today to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the 27th Annual MLK Day bell ringing. Despite the ceremony's name, he wasn't the only man honored by the event today. After the outdoor ceremonies, everyone moved inside for the awarding of the Martin Luther King Spirit Award, which is given to a community member who truly embodies the ideals that MLK was so passionate about.

West Benton firefighter offers snowplowing service in honor of two Prosser men lost

A West Benton firefighter is giving his time to a mourning community in honor of the two local young men whose lives were lost. Flags are flying at half staff around Prosser today in the wake of the deaths of James Wildman and Dylan Bolt, Prosser natives who died in a car accident last Saturday. The flag outside the West Benton Fire and Rescue Station is at half staff as well, but someone inside is taking it one step further to bring the community together: by plowing snow, and plowing it wherever it's needed.

Pullman (WA) Purchase Fire Equipment with FEMA Grant

Pullman firefighters received 54 new air packs, which is six more than they previously had.

The air packs they've been using are more than a decade old. Officials with the department say these new ones are similar to the old packs so the transition should be easy. However, technology helps them communicate better with each other during emergencies.

"When we put the pack on their rated to a certain time that we can use them," said Captain Mark Johnson, Pullman Fire Dept. "The previous ones were rated for 30 minutes these will be 45 minutes. We can Bluetooth our breathing masks to our new radios which improves our communication dramatically."

The department got these new air packs from FEMA through the assistance of a $420,000 firefighters grant.
Crews will start training with the new SCBA's in the coming weeks and the department hopes to have them all in service by sometime in February.
