When Lackawanna hired Jason Szpara and eight others to be firefighters in 2014, the cash-strapped city issued them old used breathing masks that had been turned in by retirees.
The safety equipment was tattered, Szpara recalled.
Now, on occasion, when there's a large fire in Lackawanna, there aren't enough self contained breathing apparatus – the masks and related equipment – to equip every firefighter, Lackawanna Fire Chief Ralph Galanti admitted.

A second arrest has been made in the arson fire that killed a Hamilton firefighter.
William “Billy” Tucker, 46, was arrested Friday in Richmond, Ky., on an indictment from Butler County for aggravated arson and murder for allegedly starting the fire that killed firefighter Patrick Wolterman in December 2015.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says a body found in a Sun City West pond on Friday is that of a man who's been missing for a week.
Edward Patrick Powers, who goes by Pat or Patrick, was last seen on Dec. 30 leaving his Sun City West home near 135th Avenue and Deer Valley Drive.
MCSO is calling his death "suspicious.

A collision involving an AMR ambulance left one person injured in Interstate 90, about seven miles west of Moses Lake.
Haylie L. Warren, a 24-year-old West Richland woman, was driving a 2012 Ford Econoline ambulance with lights and sirens on west on I-90 Monday afternoon, responding to a collision, according to the Washington State Patrol.
