150-year era ends with firefighter's retirement from Wisconsin department

When Marc Behrend was “on the nozzle” with the lead hose at a fire during his 28-year career with the Madison Fire Department, his fellow crew members marveled at his calm, confident demeanor and lightning-quick reactions as he worked his way through a burning building. Behrend, who will retire Friday just one day shy of his 56th birthday, earned the most coveted job among firefighters because he snuffed out fires like he stopped hockey pucks as a goalie for the University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team, leading the Badgers to two NCAA titles in the 1980s.

FDNY firefighters rescue Ryan Seacrest from elevator

VIDEO - TV host Ryan Seacrest says he and about five other people got stuck in a Times Square elevator before an appearance on ABC's "Good Morning America" and were rescued by firefighters. The host of "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest" was heading up to the crystal ball on Friday morning when the elevator got stuck.

Boy killed, four others injured when tree strikes SUV in Clallam County

A 5-year-old boy died New Year’s Day and four other people believed to be from the same Federal Way family were seriously injured when a tree fell on a white SUV travelling east around Lake Crescent on U.S. Highway 101, Clallam Fire District No. 2 Chief Sam Phillips said. Highway 101 was blocked in both directions Sunday afternoon and into Sunday evening, with traffic being diverted to state Route 112, after the 18- 20-inch-diameter tree fell on the vehicle, which was reported to authorities at 2:16 p.

2 firetrucks collide, sending 8 firefighters to hospital, damaging Seattle storefront

PHOTOS - Police are investigating a crash involving a Seattle fire engine and a ladder truck that sent eight firefighters to the hospital Sunday morning, damaged the storefront of a massage business and smashed the ladder truck so badly that it’s out of service. Alice Kim, spokeswoman for the Seattle Fire Department, said the trucks were responding to an automatic fire alarm when the crash occurred just before 8 a.

Firefighters rescue couple and dog from Vancouver apartment fire

A fire at the Parklane Apartments in north Vancouver Friday night consumed one unit and displaced 31 people. Clark County Fire District Six reported to the scene at about 8 p.m. to see thick smoke pouring out of one of the upstairs apartments and two people and a dog on an upstairs balcony. Crews put up a ladder and rescued the people and their dog.
