Clark County Fire District 6 has purchased two new properties in the Salmon Creek area, inching closer toward a planned upgrade to its fire station in the bustling neighborhood. Fire officials confirmed Wednesday the agency bought a lot at 1119 N.E. 136th St. for $630,000 on Dec. 15, as well as an adjoining lot for $133,500 in November.

The Community Fire Foundation was created with the goal of providing equipment and training to Kennewick firefighters. Kari Olson came up with the idea to form the foundation while sitting on the Police Department foundation board. "I thought why isn't there something like this for the fire department they need a lot of the same things they have a lot of equipment that is not allocated in the city budget that would totally enhance what they're trying to do in our communities," said Olson, both the founder and president of the foundation.

The City of Mattawa and Grant County Fire District No. 8 have had two discussions of fee increases the Fire District wants for service to the city, and there is no agreement. The Fire District position is that the cost of service to the city is rising. The city’s position is that it can’t go up as much or as rapidly as the Fire District wants.

Friday was a day of firsts for longtime Costco employee Mathew Rios – he typically has the day off, and he’s certainly never performed life-saving measures while dressed as a Bavarian elf. It was shortly before 10:30 a.m. and Rios had just started his shift at the Vancouver warehouse. He’s worked for Costco for 22 years, half of them at that store.
