Moments of maturity: Addressing career-volunteer issues

Managing conflict between career and volunteer members in a combination department can be challenging at times. Left unchecked, the conflict can destroy a department and create an environment of hate and discontent. I’ve spent my career working in combination departments and many hours listening to and addressing issues that emerge between volunteer and career staff.

Retired Woodinville Fire & Rescue Fire Chief Steve Smith Dies

Long time Woodinville Fire & Rescue Fire Chief Steve Smith died peacefully on Saturday, December 3 after an illness that was discovered earlier in the summer of 2016. He was 67. Chief Smith retired in 2005 after a 38 year-long career in the fire service. Smith started his career as volunteer firefighter in King County Fire District 40 near Renton.

Spokane County Fire District 8 firefighter dies in sleep after shift

A volunteer firefighter died Nov. 28 in his sleep after returning home from shift. Firefighter Charles "Doug" Archer, 49, with the Spokane County Fire District 8, had responded with crews to a residential fire and an aid call. When firefighter Archer returned home to rest, he died in his sleep, according to the U.

Steel and cable chains keep Pullman Fire Dept. ambulances on the road

We aren’t the only ones prepping our vehicles for this weather. First responders have to be ready too. KLEW News Palouse Bureau Chief, Alex Crescenti has more. Here at the Pullman Fire Department they've been receiving calls on a regular basis, even before the winter weather hit, but now that it's here they've had to adapt to the conditions at hand.

Chehalis Fire Department Contracts With Vader for Fire Investigation Services

The Chehalis City Council approved an interlocal agreement with Vader to provide and receive payment for fire investigation services performed on behalf of the South Lewis County town. According to the agenda report, the Chehalis Fire Department provides fire investigation services to Lewis County. Since fire service in Vader is provided by Cowlitz County-Lewis County Fire Protection District 20, some confusion has surfaced in relation to fire investigation responsibilities.
