WTC dust caused first responders’ nerve damage, study finds

First responders who worked on the dusty, smoldering pile of debris in the aftermath of the Twin Towers’ collapse 15 years ago have begun showing signs of debilitating nerve damage, a team of Long Island doctors has found for the first time. The research, led by Dr. Marc Wilkenfeld at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, is the third of his investigations to link World Trade Center dust to nerve damage, but it is the first beyond his statistical studies to confirm it in a small group of patients.

Snohomish County: Veterans join team helping elders injured by falls at home

The first fall can be a warning sign. Perhaps a new glasses prescription is long overdue. Or a throw rug needs to be moved so it doesn’t catch toes. Falls are one of the top reasons for 911 calls in Snohomish County, particularly for older adults. To prevent these accidents, Snohomish County Fire District 1 is enlisting help from veterans.

NTSB chairman: Mechanical failure led to Ride the Ducks crash in Seattle

The chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board says an investigation into a deadly amphibious tour boat crash in Seattle found it was caused by a mechanical failure. NTSB Chairman Christopher Hart said Tuesday the Ride the Ducks vehicle had a fractured left axle housing. Five people died and 69 people were injured in the Sept.

Nearly one year later, Spokane Co. Fire Dist. 8 Division Chief recalls close call during November windstorm

Like a scene from a movie, the might of the November windstorm snapped power poles in half, creating an endless entanglement of hissing and sparking power lines. Like dominoes, it toppled trees, pulling their roots from the ground. And from the hands of an invisible giant, the siege ripped roofs off countless homes.
