From July 23 to July 30, 24 young women from around the country will come together to explore a career in firefighting. They will participate in a leadership camp led by women firefighters like Margo Freeman, a 19-year veteran of the Kirkland Fire Department. Camp Blaze, a nonprofit organization developed by the International Association of Women in Fire and Emergency Services, seeks to “empower, inspire and support strong women leaders” through a free weeklong training program located at the Washington State Fire Training Academy in North Bend.

Six months into a contract with Clark County Fire District 3, the city of Battle Ground reports that the new partnership is exceeding expectations.
Since the fire agency began responding to emergency calls in Battle Ground in January, city officials said they’re impressed by the agency’s work and its effort to reach out to the community.

Don Ishman, the former chief of the Hilltop Volunteer Fire Department, was killed Saturday afternoon when he was accidentally struck by a tanker apparatus at the firehall on Saturday afternoon.
Kane-based state police said Ishman, 60, of Cyclone, was one of several firefighters assisting with a public service detail on Saturday.

An Orford firefighter died in the line of duty, according to the State Fire Marshal's Office. Charles Waterbury was an active member of the Orford Fire Department for about 10 years.
While fighting a brush fire in Lyme, Waterbury suffered a medical emergency and was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.
