NFPA talks with keeper of 'The Secret List'

The 1980’s cartoon series “G.I. Joe” ended each episode with an often corny and sometimes salient lesson, always following roughly the same script: A few adolescents get an oafish idea, like jumping their bikes over a downed sparking electrical wire, when a prominent member of the Joe squad materializes to explain their error in judgment.

Why fire service data matters

Let me get this fact out of the way: I love sports. In fact, there aren't many sports that I don't follow. And, when there is a chance of a record being broken or a milestone achieved, it certainly has my attention. Why is it that we cheer on horses who have a chance to win the Triple Crown? Why is it we enjoy a pitcher throwing a perfect game, a hockey player completing the hat trick or a golfer winning all four majors? It's because there are levels of excellence that spectators and fans like to see people and teams accomplish.

Poulsbo man accused of arson, making threats

A 42-year-old Poulsbo man accused of lighting afire a pile of gasoline-doused debris piled in the street before fighting with a police officer pleaded not guilty Wednesday to counts of attempted second-degree arson and felony harassment. Police had responded to the scene after receiving reports of a man acting irrationally and yelling at neighbors.

Sunnyside man sacrifices his hand to save a child

Every year at the beginning of July, we are reminded how dangerous fireworks are. this year there were hundreds of injuries and doctors at Harbor View Medical Center in Seattle treated 18 people for hand injuries alone. One of those injuries happened close to home in Sunnyside. A man sacrificed a part of himself to save a child.

Spokane County Fire District 4 asking voters for higher EMS levy

Voters in Spokane County Fire District 4 north of Spokane will see a renewal of the district’s emergency medical services levy on ballots arriving in the mail for the August election. The levy has been in place since the 1990s and has been renewed by voters every six years, said Fire Chief Randy Johnson.
