On a cool Tuesday morning in late May, 20 members of the Entiat Hotshots wielded 25-pound chainsaws, tossed cut shrubs and small trees yards out of the way and chopped at the earth with Pulaskis.
In six hours, the men and women cleared a 10-foot-wide, half-mile-long path down a steep hillside on Tyee Mountain.

Deputies responding to a report of gunshots and a house fire in Elma found a body outside the burning home, and now sheriff's officials say they believe it was a homicide. Another body may be inside the home, officials said.
Meanwhile, a neighbor says it sounded like a gun battle erupted at the house before the fire.

Mike Riel launched what would become a 35-year firefighting career as an East Valley volunteer, serving the same area where he grew up on a hop ranch.
East Valley’s fire chief since 2013, he retired Tuesday.
