Mike Riel launched what would become a 35-year firefighting career as an East Valley volunteer, serving the same area where he grew up on a hop ranch.
East Valley’s fire chief since 2013, he retired Tuesday.
“My heart was always at home,” he said in a telephone interview. “I wanted to come back and serve my community.

Recordings just obtained by KOMO News detail ongoing failures in Snohomish County's 911 response system. One call for help back on March 18 escalated into a lengthy delay.
Debra Teal was driving with her 6-year-old son Gage when she was rear-ended while turning onto 132nd St SE in Everett. Her son hurt his head, so she pulled into a Walgreens parking lot to wait for police and medics.

Shari Hall, one of two finalists whom the County Commission considered last year to be chief of Marion County Fire Rescue, is suing the county and alleging that it engaged in gender discrimination by choosing the male finalist, Paul Nevels.
Before filing suit in circuit court earlier this month Hall lodged discrimination complaints with the U.

Monday, May 23 was a dark day for the Warfield Volunteer Fire Department as they had five vehicles repossessed by a Illinois based company called First Government Lease citing non payment for the past six months. WVFD Chief Doug Hinkle and several members of the fire department were at Thursday’s fiscal court explaining the situation the fire department is in.
