Wenatchee considering fireworks ban after last summer's devastating wildfires

The Wenatchee City Council is considering a ban on fireworks following last summer's devastating wildfires. "It's a real sense of loss," said Suellen Harris, whose Wenatchee home was among dozens destroyed when the Sleepy Hollow Fire ripped through Chelan County last June. "I'm used to this being a sheltering place and now it's like an artifact," said Harris.

Chicago Fire Department Collecting Fire Equipment from Paramedics

The Chicago Fire Department is making another round of changes that, a union leader warned Monday, could put the lives of paramedics and the general public in danger. Two years ago, self-contained breathing apparatus were removed from all 75 Chicago ambulances.
"Local 2 believe the removal of the bunker gear from our paramedics is not in the best interest of our membership," Tom Ryan, president of the Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2 wrote in a text message to the Chicago Sun-Times.

"Chicago's paramedics face extremely dangerous situations every day on every shift. These dangers are often unforeseen and unpredictable. With Chicago not only being a national but an international destination, we must be prepared to respond to any and all emergencies."

The decision to strip paramedics of equipment bought just for them was announced in a May 4 memo signed by Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner Mark Nielsen, who runs the Bureau of Operations.

Cleveland Fire Department's Air Compressors are Broken

The Cleveland fire department has no working air compressors to fill oxygen tanks. All of the department's air compressors have broken over the last year, forcing firefighters to drive the department's air truck to Valley View every day to get enough air to fill the tanks, Tim Corcoran, the new president of the firefighter's union, Local 93, said.
A city spokesman confirmed the air compressors were broken, but did not respond to follow-up questions.

Each firefighter is assigned two air tanks, that typically last 10 to 15 minutes each, Corcoran said. The department has six air compressors at stations around the city to refill the firefighter's tanks.

The department's main compressor broke last February, Corcoran said. Five smaller compressors also broke one-by-one.

Ten days ago, the final compressor broke.

The city and Parma reached an agreement to let Cleveland firefighters fill up their air truck at the Parma Fire Department, but that agreement fell through, Corcoran said.

Now, firefighters have to drive to Valley View Fire Department to fill their tank up. That process takes four hours, Corcoran said.

New Tomslake (AK) Fire Apparatus Help in Wildfires

Call it a trial by fire -- literally. Just days after the volunteer fire department in Tomslake received two new trucks to replace aging vehicles, several wildfires broke out in the region-putting them to use immediately. "This brings us into the 21st century of fire fighting."
"These girls, they arrived on the 16th," said fire chief George Giersch. "We trained for two days, outfitted them on the 18th and by 7 p.m. that day we had our first call and then two others the next day and another the day after. They've worked and we've been really happy with them. This brings us into the 21st century of fire fighting."

The new mini-pumper and tanker replace two vehicles from 1974 and 1979 and are the first completely new fire fighting units the department has seen since it began operating 41 years ago.

The custom designed equipment, which cost north of $500,000, was paid for with funding from the Peace River Agreement, Encana Corp., Saddle Hills County and funds raised by the fire department itself.

Highland Park (MI) Fire Chief Issues Plea to Replace Fire Apparatus

The Fire Chief in Highland Park is issuing a plea for help. His city has only one, aging fire engine. "It's more than 20 years old with 60,000 hours of pumping water," says Chief Kevin Coney.
"We are doing everything we can to make things work" says Coney.

The chief says a donated fire engine in good condition, would definitely make a tremendous difference, for the people of Highland Park.
