Cowlitz Chaplaincy welcomes first woman and Spanish-speaking pastor

A few hours after a fatal New Year’s Eve shooting near Woodland, the Cowlitz Chaplaincy’s newest member was called out. On her first call as a chaplain, Caliatra Riesterer arrived at 4 a.m. and focused on the women at the scene, spending several hours with the 27-year-old victim’s mother. “It was a huge event,” said Tom Haan, executive director of the Chaplaincy.

Eastside firefighters taking part in Climb for a Cure

Starting Saturday, Feb. 6, and continuing for two more weekends, Eastside Firefighters will team up with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in their annual “Climb for a Cure” campaign. Firefighters will be raising funds, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Issaquah Fred Meyer, Feb. 13 at the Sammamish Safeway and Feb.

Families of 4 Houston firefighters in LODD hotel fire file lawsuit over radio system

Almost three years after the deadliest day in the history of the Houston Fire Department, the families of four firefighters who battled a catastrophic hotel blaze have filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit over the department’s troubled digital radio system. As flames engulfed the Southwest Inn hotel on a hot day in May 2013, firefighters battling the five-alarm blaze also had to fight problems with their new radios.

Louisiana EMT dies after being crushed by vehicle rack holding ambulance

A 44-year-old EMT died Wednesday evening (Feb. 10) when an equipment failure at the West Jefferson Emergency Medical Services Headquarters caused an ambulance to fall on him, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said. JPSO officers were called at 5:32 p.m. and the victim was taken to West Jefferson Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
