Kingston Fire Chief Says Low Bid for New Ladder Truck 'Unacceptable'

KINGSTON >> Fire Chief Mark Brown now says a low bid for the purchase of a new ladder truck is "unacceptable." Brown said last week that he and Mayor Steve Noble had met concerning the bid which came in more than $250,000 more than what the Common Council had authorized for spending on a new truck.

“We are diligently looking for a truck at a lower price,” Brown said. “I think that (the bid) is unacceptable and I think that we can do better and we can get a truck at a lower price and that is the avenue we need to take.”

Brown said he is researching another possibility to lessen the cost and is not likely to request additional funding to cover the bid amount.

Brown would not be more specific about the proposal. However, he said, one is expected to be presented to the Common Council in April.

“I would prefer not to disclose those avenues at this time until research into those avenues (is conducted),” Brown said.

In early February, Noble had said that he and Brown continue to review the pending purchase to replace the department’s current ladder truck, which breaks down frequently.

Cana Rescue Gets New Ambulance after Wreck

People who live in southern Carroll County can now have peace of mind knowing there's a new piece of equipment at the local rescue squad. The volunteer station just got a new ambulance Friday after one was totaled last fall. Proud is an understatement for volunteers at the Cana Volunteer Rescue Squad.

"I would have never dreamed in years that we would have had something as nice as this," said Jason Busick, the captain of the Cana Volunteer Rescue Squad.

The special lifts for heavy oxygen tanks, even the Chevron reflectors on the back are big advances for this rescue squad.

"It's one of the top of the line. That's for sure," Busick said. "Unfortunately it had to come from an accident."

It happened last October about a mile away from the rescue squad. The volunteers were on their way back from the hospital in Galax.

"Explain to me what happened that night," WDBJ7 asked.

"They were coming south on 52 and there was another vehicle that hit them in the front corner and caused our ambulance to turn over," Busick said.

The wreck sent both people inside to the hospital with no serious injuries. The ambulance was a total loss.

Cape Coral Fire Dept. Welcomes New Fire Truck

On Monday afternoon, Cape Coral Fire Department's Station 5 welcomed its newest member with a special ceremony. Not every firefighter that walks through the doors of the station receives such an honor. But, this was a special occasion, as the Department christened its newest fire engine, "Engine 5".

The new state-of-the-art pump truck comes equipped with a 450hp Cummings engine and can pump 1,500 gallons per minute, hold 1,000 gallons of water, and carries 3,500 feet of hose.

Engine 5 will replace a 2002 pump truck that will be moved to reserve status, to replace another truck that is 25 years old.

The fire department held a time-honored tradition in fire departments across the country called a "Housing Ceremony," to mark the occasion of Engine 5's arrival,

The ceremony began with a blessing from Pastor Dennis Gingrich, and a few words from Cape Coral Fire Chief Donald Cochran and Mayor Marni Sawicki, who said due to the implementation of the recent Fire Service Assessment the department is on much more stable footing than it has been over the past few years, "This is the start of some really great times. With the implementation of the Fire Service Assessment, we now have the funding mechanisms in place to ensure our citizens will have reliable vehicles and equipment when an emergency situation arises."

Scott Safety Launches Service and Asset Management Software Solution for Firefighters

Scott Safety Service and Asset Management (SAM) solution

Scott Safety, a Tyco business, announced the launch of a new Service and Asset Management (SAM) solution, a software application that allows fire departments to more efficiently manage inspections, testing, service, and reporting of their equipment assets. The intuitive, easy-to-use application runs on a common consumer device such as an iPad or iPhone.

In addition to streamlining inspections and testing of SCBA and other equipment, the solution provides service centers real-time notifications on equipment failure and service requests. SAM’s cloud-based infrastructure eliminates on-premise software, databases, and paper records.  Records are easily accessible online to both fire officers and service centers.

“SAM provides an innovative way for firefighters to inspect and test their Scott SCBA accurately to ensure safety and supports compliance to NFPA 1852 and OSHA 1910.134 standards,” said Jeff Emery, Director of Marketing and Product Management at Scott Safety. “It gives firefighters peace of mind that their equipment is in working order and gives the fire chiefs confidence that their people are safe.”

SAM is a turnkey solution designed to provide an easier and more effective way to manage equipment assets.  Key features include:

  • Simple and easy to use mobile interface
  • Cloud-based solution that eliminates on-premise software installation and hosting
  • Minimal IT requirements
  • Notifications provide a real-time view of equipment status
  • Dashboard provides a graphical representation of equipment status based on a user defined time interval
  • Reports provide full visibility into equipment data and can be exported to PDF for email/print
  • Digital records eliminate the need to file and manage paper copies, reducing your carbon footprint

Scott Safety will showcase SAM at FDIC booth # 2323.
