Passerby alerts Kennewick family of house fire

A Kennewick family is lucky to be okay after a fire took over their home early Friday morning. Kennewick Fire Battalion Chief Tod Kreutz says a passerby in a car noticed flames outside the home on North Yost Street and West Canal Drive in Kennewick. That person knocked on the door and woke up the three people inside.

Red Cross program focus: Smoke alarms for Snohomish County mobile home parks

Hundreds of Snohomish County homes now have working smoke alarms thanks to a campaign by the American Red Cross. So far, they've installed or distributed about 900 alarms to 450 homes, mostly mobile homes, said Chuck Morrison, the director of the local Red Cross chapter. They aim to hit 1,000 smoke alarms by June.

Former FDNY Commissioner Scoppetta dies at age 83

Nicholas Scoppetta, who served in top city government posts spanning six decades and four mayors, has died. Scoppetta, 83, served as the city’s fire commissioner just months after the Sept. 11 terror attacks under then-Mayor Mike Bloomberg. He had the formidable task of rebuilding an agency that lost 343 firefighters.

Jury Returns Mixed Verdicts in San Diego Firefighter Stabbing Case

A jury on Thursday convicted a man accused of stabbing two San Diego firefighters of two counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter, but acquitted him of the more serious attempted murder charges. The jury also found Ryan Allen Jones guilty of assault with a deadly weapon and another count of battery related to an assault of MTS officers.
