Bay Minette Fire Department Gets New Ladder Truck

The city of Bay Minette has a new ladder truck thanks to the grant writing skills of the Bay Minette Fire Department personnel. The fire truck was purchased with a FEMA grant for a total of $637,689. The grant funding was 90/10 match requiring the city to pay $32,261 toward the purchase.

Mayor Robert A. "Bob" Wills praised the department staff for all their hard work in acquiring the grant.

"It would have put a significant financial burden on the City if we would have had to purchase this truck outright. Obtaining the grant made it possible," Wills said. "This is a terrific asset for our city which gives our Fire Department increased capability to serve our citizens."

The 2016 Farrara Cinder custom six-man cab fire truck is now in operation and replaces a 1978 fire truck that the Fire Department had in use. The new equipment includes a 77-foot ladder and is lighter and has a shorter turning radius.

Some of its features include a 1,500 gallons per minute pump, 500 gallon water tank, large cab for scene rehab for firefighters, 1500 GMP Elevated Master Stream/Stand Pipe for commercial roof top fires, more storage capacity and it is set-up to assist with technical rescue operations.

Kingston Fire Chief Says Low Bid for New Ladder Truck 'Unacceptable'

KINGSTON >> Fire Chief Mark Brown now says a low bid for the purchase of a new ladder truck is "unacceptable." Brown said last week that he and Mayor Steve Noble had met concerning the bid which came in more than $250,000 more than what the Common Council had authorized for spending on a new truck.

“We are diligently looking for a truck at a lower price,” Brown said. “I think that (the bid) is unacceptable and I think that we can do better and we can get a truck at a lower price and that is the avenue we need to take.”

Brown said he is researching another possibility to lessen the cost and is not likely to request additional funding to cover the bid amount.

Brown would not be more specific about the proposal. However, he said, one is expected to be presented to the Common Council in April.

“I would prefer not to disclose those avenues at this time until research into those avenues (is conducted),” Brown said.

In early February, Noble had said that he and Brown continue to review the pending purchase to replace the department’s current ladder truck, which breaks down frequently.

Cana Rescue Gets New Ambulance after Wreck

People who live in southern Carroll County can now have peace of mind knowing there's a new piece of equipment at the local rescue squad. The volunteer station just got a new ambulance Friday after one was totaled last fall. Proud is an understatement for volunteers at the Cana Volunteer Rescue Squad.

"I would have never dreamed in years that we would have had something as nice as this," said Jason Busick, the captain of the Cana Volunteer Rescue Squad.

The special lifts for heavy oxygen tanks, even the Chevron reflectors on the back are big advances for this rescue squad.

"It's one of the top of the line. That's for sure," Busick said. "Unfortunately it had to come from an accident."

It happened last October about a mile away from the rescue squad. The volunteers were on their way back from the hospital in Galax.

"Explain to me what happened that night," WDBJ7 asked.

"They were coming south on 52 and there was another vehicle that hit them in the front corner and caused our ambulance to turn over," Busick said.

The wreck sent both people inside to the hospital with no serious injuries. The ambulance was a total loss.
