How to keep firefighters from quitting

I recently read an article about a large fire department's concern regarding retention of its members. This department is in the process of hiring 75 new firefighters to replace members who have left the department in the past year. Other fire departments of all sizes are facing the replacement of significant numbers of firefighters in the coming years.

Column: Boston firefighters went where the heart leads

The two reports, one federal, the other produced by the Boston Fire Department, about the 2014 Beacon Street fire that killed Boston Fire Lieutenant Ed Walsh and firefighter Mike Kennedy make for tough reading. The communications timeline, with Walsh repeatedly calling for water that didn’t come because their hose had been burned through, is especially hard to read.

PHOTOS: Woman rescued after car goes over embankment in Edmonds

Snohomish County Fire District 1 crews were called to the 400 block of Howell Way about 2:15 p.m. Sunday to rescue a woman from her vehicle after it went over this embankment near the MS Helping Hands store. According to Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes, it took about 45 minutes to get the victim out of the car.
