After protecting firefighters for years, a load of old turnouts has been put back into service thanks to inmates at the Washington State Penitentiary.
The turnouts — fire-resistant coats and pants — have been recycled into storage bags for firefighters’ breathing masks, rope bags and even teddy bears by workers at the prison’s Sustainable Practices Lab.

West Valley firefighters say a Good Samaritan is to thank for saving two dogs trapped inside a home that caught on fire.
Crews responded to the 800 Block of South 69th Avenue just after 12 p.m. on Saturday to find flames and heavy smoke filling the house. Firefighters got it under control within just 10 minutes, no one got hurt.

The cause of a fire that damaged units in a Kennewick apartment complex last week is still undetermined, though it doesn’t appear the blaze was set intentionally, officials said Monday.
The March 3 fire at the Edison Green Village Apartments likely started in the kitchen of an upstairs unit, said Battalion Chief Kevin Crowley.
