Two members of the Canterbury Fire Department have quit, and others could be on their way out after last Friday’s town meeting
Captains Donald Maurer and Scott Ruesswick have left their positions at the volunteer department within the last week, citing Canterbury residents’ decision to approve the purchase of a $340,000 fire engine recommended by Canterbury selectmen, despite the fire department’s plan to purchase a $490,000 engine.

VIDEO - In Prince George's County, the firefighters union president and the fire chief are sounding an alarm because someone has been damaging the safety equipment belonging to the career medics and firefighters at the Glassmanor-Oxon Hill Firehouse.
"Our turnout gear is our lifeline," firefighters union president Andrew Pantelis says.

Highland is a small, close knit community, but over the weekend an act of vandalism left many surprised and concerned.
Saturday night's arson left parts of Highland high school's track field charred, the school's high jump mats completely destroyed, and the vandals even managed to douse the rest of the track mats in gasoline.

Yakima County leaders are taking steps to educate more people about fire danger.
County commissioners have signed an agreement with the Department of Natural Resources to establish more "Firewise communities."
Firewise communities are a way for neighbors to take initiative and responsibility for their homes and protect themselves from wildfires.
