Everett firefighters say department cuts could cost lives

Every moment counted in the effort to save lives during a New Year's Eve apartment fire in Everett. There are possible cuts looming over the Everett Fire Department, and firefighters say lives could be lost if that happens. On Wednesday night, members of the local Firefighter's Union told city leaders that the department is already stretched thin.

Anacortes Fire Department has reinvigorated volunteer program

The Anacortes Fire Department has new volunteer recruits and a reinvigorated program after a city contractor spent five months reworking the program. The City Council OK’d a contract for Aug. 1-Dec. 31 for about $26,000 to focus on the program. The department now has two types of volunteers — shift firefighters and support volunteers.

South Whidbey Fire/EMS commissioner to start first term

Frank Mestemacher will begin his six-year term as a fire commissioner for South Whidbey Fire/EMS at the district’s first regular monthly meeting of the year on Jan. 14. Elected in November, Mestemacher will replace longtime commissioner Mike Helland. Mestemacher, a Freeland resident, served as a volunteer firefighter for 15 years and left the department as a captain.
