Police are investigating two fires within 15 minutes of each other in the same neighborhood hit hard by a string of unsolved arsons last year.
Officials say a 12-foot boat was set on fire around 1 a.m. in the 3500 block of I St. NE and crews were able to quickly put that out. Less than a mile away, firefighters were called to the 1200 block of 43rd St NE where a house was ablaze.

Every moment counted in the effort to save lives during a New Year's Eve apartment fire in Everett.
There are possible cuts looming over the Everett Fire Department, and firefighters say lives could be lost if that happens. On Wednesday night, members of the local Firefighter's Union told city leaders that the department is already stretched thin.

The Anacortes Fire Department has new volunteer recruits and a reinvigorated program after a city contractor spent five months reworking the program.
The City Council OK’d a contract for Aug. 1-Dec. 31 for about $26,000 to focus on the program.
The department now has two types of volunteers — shift firefighters and support volunteers.
