At age 44, there are days when Virginia Beach Fire Captain Matt Chiaverotti doesn't have the energy to pick himself up from his recliner that sits by his living room window.
Cancer is making him weak.
On Aug. 23 of last year, he got a grim diagnosis: late-stage anaplastic thyroid cancer, a rare disease making up 1% to 2% of thyroid cancer cases.

We all hear and see them in our community virtually every day, fire trucks and first responders responding to fire calls.
Many times, those calls turn out to be false alarms and fire officials across the nation and our region say they have seen the number of false alarms increasing and that’s creating an unnecessary risk to the public and first responders.

An FDNY lieutenant received a life-saving lung transplant from fallen firefighter William “Billy” Moon — and, in a heartfelt tribute from his hospital bed, thanked the hero’s widow for donating her late husband’s organs.
Lt. Terrence Jordan is among five people — and two members of New York’s Bravest — to whom Moon’s organs were donated after the 47-year-old dad of two died during a training accident at his Brooklyn firehouse in December.

An early morning fire left a Yakima machine shop in shambles, according to a post from Yakima Firefighters IAFF Local 469.
Fire crews say they responded to a structure fire in the 600 block of West Washington.
They say the fire quickly spread throughout the shop, Marvin Mayhak & Son's Inc. due to the machinery inside.
