Sunnyside: Paramedics saving local lives for 20 years

For two decades local residents have been able to count on paramedics in an emergency. The city started its ambulance service in 1989, but it hired its first two paramedics in January 1996, according to Fire Chief Aaron Markham. Those two paramedics, Dennis Blumer and Gregg Hutchinson, are still on the job.

HME Delivers Scorpion Aerial Platform Fire Truck to Ontario Department

The West Nipissing Fire Service, of Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, recently took delivery of an HME Scorpion. Built on a HME Spectr 8x4 chassis and MFDxl cab, this 104-foot platform features tandem steer, dual drive, front axles and a 208-inch overall wheelbase for maximum maneuverability. Powered by a Cummins ISM 500-hp engine, the truck uses an Allison 4000 EVS transmission. Incorporating HME Hydra Technology with a Waterous CXVC20F 1,500-gpm pump, the HME Scorpion is the first apparatus in the industry to use touchscreen pump valve controls. Additional features include seating for a crew of six, NFPA ladder complement, Xantrex Freedom inverter, Power Arc warning lights, Elkhart Scorpion monitor, FRC LED scene lights, conveniently located crosslays and discharges, a 500-gallon water tank, and innovative storage systems.

6 injured in multi-vehicle pileup in Seattle

Six people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash Friday morning on Seattle's Westlake Avenue, including one victim who was trapped and had to be extricated by firefighters. Police, medics and several ambulances responded to the pileup, on Westlake Avenue North near Crockett Street, at 8:45 a.m. after receiving reports of a serious crash.

WSU, College Hill area get half of Pullman Fire Department calls, chief says

Pullman Fire Chief Mike Heston said approximately half of the more than 3,000 calls his department responded to last year were to Washington State University and the College Hill area. Heston addressed the increase in calls and various other challenges and changes happening with the Pullman Fire Department at a League of Women Voters brown bag meeting Thursday in Pullman.
