Child dies in Southeast D.C.; nearest ambulance was 7 miles away

A child died in Southeast Washington on Thursday, when the closest available ambulance was about seven miles from the scene of the emergency. That ambulance never made it to the child, and a fire engine started the trip to the hospital instead. The boy was unconscious and not breathing when the fire engine arrived, D.

High school program preps students to be Detroit firefighters, EMTs

The City of Detroit and its public schools are launching a two-year pilot project to train high school students to become firefighters in the city, officials said today. A group of 30 students will be the first trained when school starts next week, and by the time they graduate from the Cody High School Complex, they will be certified as both firefighters and emergency medical technicians (EMTs).

Number of Arson Fires in Pasco Have Dropped Dramatically Since Arrest

Police and firefighters scrambling to put out dozens of suspicious fires in Pasco this summer have noticed a dramatic drop in the number of them. That change seems to have come right after the arrest of a man who appeared in court again Thursday morning. Right now it's hard to get any clear answers from Pasco Police or the Pasco Fire Department regarding the investigation of 44-year-old Abel Contreras.

Clallam County deputy evacuates mobile home resident as fire spreads from neighboring empty house

A Clallam County Sheriff’s deputy evacuated a resident and his pets from a mobile home as it caught fire from a blaze that destroyed an empty cedar house on Wednesday. At 10:32 p.m. Wednesday a neighbor called 9-1-1 to report a fire in the empty house at 113 S. Brook Ave., east of Port Angeles. Deputy Matt Murphy, who was on patrol nearby, was the first to reach the address, arriving within a minute of the report, said Brian King, chief criminal deputy for the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.
