Los Angeles County authorities have demanded the end of a controversial program that reduced the number of paramedics on Long Beach ambulances by half, saying it compromised public safety.
In July 2014, the so-called “rapid medic deployment” moved one paramedic from each of the eight city ambulances to work on Long Beach Fire Department fire engines.

A firefighter injured battling a blaze in Twisp has been upgraded from critical to serious condition.
A spokeswoman for Harborview Medical Center said Saturday that Daniel Lyon is alert and breathing on his own. He's undergone two successful burn surgeries, and more are planned. He remains in intensive care.

Several thousand people gathered Sunday to honor three U.S. Forest Service firefighters killed battling the Okanogan complex of wildfires.
Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell in a eulogy says the three dedicated their lives to protecting national forests and the communities around them, and for that everyone should be grateful.
